Notes
During the selection in the ghetto, all the residents of their building were lined up for deportation. His father ordered Leon to show his work ID to the German officer. Leon was working at a brush factory at the time, producing goods for the German army. The officer looked at him, scanned him from head to toe, and barked, "Raus!" (Get out!). Leon ran back to the empty apartment. On the stove, he saw the potatoes his mother had left unpeeled – the last trace of his family. His parents, his sister Luba, and his younger brother Jankiel were taken to Umschlagplatz, and from there, he guessed, straight to the gas chambers in Treblinka.
