Notes
During the selection process in the ghetto, all the residents of their building were lined up for deportation. Leon's father ordered Leon to show a German officer his employment ID. Leon worked at a brush factory at the time, producing for the German army. The officer looked at him, looked him over, and growled, "Raus!" (Get out!). Leon ran back to the empty apartment. On the stove, he saw his mother peeling potatoes unfinished – the last trace of his family. His parents, sister Luba, and younger brother Jankiel were taken to the Umschlagplatz, and from there, he guessed, straight to the gas chambers in Treblinka.
