Notes
In the winter of 1942, Chana got to the Aryan side. She begged. Polish policemen caught her and sent her to a ghetto prison. In prison, she had frostbitten both feet. Both her feet were black with gangrene and she was gaunt when she was taken to the hospital at 1 Leszno Street. Her feet had to be amputated. After the operation, she was taken care of by Marek Balin, a medical student and hospital worker. Balin tried to bring her back to life and nourish her. Her wounds began to granulate and she gained strength. She asked the staff for work, was willing to take any job. She began to do darning and sewing. Balin tried to arrange a wheelchair for her so that she could leave the hospital after six months of treatment. There were about 600 patients in the (surgical) hospital then. On August 15, 1942, the Germans ordered the doctors to empty the hospital so that only 150 patients remained. A decision was to be made during the evening tour, led by Dr.'s Rothaub, Borkowski and Szenicer. On the patient list, the "+" mark next to the name meant deportation, and the "-" mark meant the patient would stay in the hospital. An "+" was marked next to Chana's name. After the doctors left, she began to cry loudly. The doctors have not finished their selection. The next day the Germans entered and they filled 5 vans with the sick themselves.
