Notes
At the beginning of the war, both of Sam's sisters and their husbands decided to escape to the Russian occupation zone. They were resettled deep in the country, to Słonim. After the German attack on the USSR in 1941, the sisters and their families were captured and murdered in a mass execution in the forest. News of their deaths was brought to the ghetto by Sam's cousin, Izrael, who was the only one to escape execution thanks to his sewing skills. Sam and his brother kept this news secret from their mother to spare her suffering.
