Yakir was a professor at the Tarbut School, a novelist and journalist, writing in Yiddish and Hebrew, and a Zionist activist. Born into a Hasidic family, he was the son of a small merchant. He received a traditional religious education, then became interested in modern languages and Hebrew. At first he worked as a Hebrew teacher in Gostynin, then as a bookkeeper in Mława, and finally again as a teacher in Plock. He traveled extensively in Poland, Europe and the Middle East, and visited Palestine. He published in the Hebrew and Yiddish press. A Zionist, he was a committed activist in the youth movement. During the occupation he was employed by the Labor Department of the Warsaw Judenrat. He died murdered in Treblinka.
