Notes
He worked as a manager in his father Izaak Jakub Topas’s family shoe company. The business was one of the best-known companies manufacturing and selling footwear in Poland. In the ghetto he chaired the self-help committee for the residents of his tenement building. To support the family, he also organised an illegal bakery with former employees, operating in one of the flats in the building. Abraham was taken to Treblinka together with his elder son Szymon while his son George (Jurek) was in a Luftwaffe labour camp. After returning, Jerzy found his father’s bed unmade and an open book — Heinrich Graetz’s "History of the Jews" — with the page still marked where his father had been reading shortly before he was taken away.
