Notes
When the Germans occupied Kalisz at the beginning of the war, Volksdeutsche went from house to house, taking whatever they wanted and beating people. Afterwards, all the Jews were gathered into a ghetto, where they slept on straw spread over the ground. After two months, the Germans transported the Jews of Kalisz to the Warsaw ghetto. They were told that they would be sent to work and given accommodation — they had no idea they were in fact being sent to extermination camps. Hendla most probably perished in Treblinka.
