- Notes
- "During World War II, the holy community of Augustów was wiped out by the Nazis, as were other Jewish communities in Europe. On December 8, 1943 [error - year 1942], the remnants of the Jewish community were sent by train to Treblinka, to die in the gas chambers. In the stuffy car of the death train, the last Jews of Augustów, were crowded together. They surrounded the old, beloved rabbi, who trusted in God's mercy until the last moment. Being close to him was their last comfort. His strength deserted him and he died on the train."
