Notes
Josef Reuwen Lichtensztajn and his wife were shot in the marketplace during the formation of the transport. Josef was blind; he asked his wife to tie a white napkin with a loaf of bread around his neck in order to signal his condition. The Germans shot both of them directly at the assembly point. "Later we learned that 42 people — old and sick, who could not or would not go to the Market Square and remained in their homes — were murdered in cold blood. Among them were my wife’s grandfather, Reb Josef Reuven Lichtenstein, and his wife Gitel."
